Perhaps that is Gibbons feeding a bit of mythology. He says the film team and ZZ’s tour crew got signals crossed. “We arrived and our gear was all set up,” Gibbons says. In the 21st century, the historic dance hall in Gruene would have to suffice. The band started at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Beaumont in Feb. “The director asked about getting us to pose for some snapshots in a place similar to where we had started.” “It’s prudent to include the fact that we didn’t know we were being recorded,” Gibbons says. The album was recorded while the group performed at Gruene Hall for the 2019 documentary “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas.” While the band is looking forward, it’s also looking back with the summer release of “Raw,” which is a curious new entry in the ZZ Top discography. It’s like we have a renewed sense of visitation.” Gibbons says Francis joining the band on stage has “created a kind of unexpected reinvention of some longstanding compositions. But Dusty smiled and said, ‘In doing so, he’ll get much more to the point'.” He thought the only difference was that he plays using his fingers and Elwood plays with a pick. “He said if he was late getting back, he’d already appointed Elwood to stop in. “Dusty said he’d been feeling out of sorts,” Gibbons says. Gibbons’ longtime friend and guitar tech Elwood Francis knew the music inside out and also had a pandemic beard that facilitated an aesthetic continuity. But the band has done a great job presenting its music to its fans without him. ZZ Top returns to its hometown this week for a show without Hill. He also possessed a heavy feel for rhythm and with Beard created the launch pads for Gibbons’ instantly recognizable guitar parts. Hill had no capacity for pussyfooting around a subject, but he also had a sharp, back-pocket sense of humor. But if you drove to Pasadena, especially in 1969, 1970, you didn’t have to look out the window to know you were in Pasadena. We weren’t Bob Dylan or anything, writing socially active songs. “It’s a lot of things,” he said, after a laugh. I asked Hill, all these years later, what was the meaning behind the song and song title “Squank.” Was it an animal? A metaphor? In 2021, I had the good fortune to talk to Hill about “ZZ Top’s First Album,” which was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Where: Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, 2005 Lake Robbins, The Woodlandsĭetails: $29.50-$179 “We don’t have a smoking room,” he was told. He told me last year, “Sunshine doesn’t hold much for me,” which is a comment I relate to and think about often.Ī decade or so ago, the Houston band was doing an event in a museum in New York when Beard asked a museum employee where their smoking room was. But before we get to that, I felt like sharing just a few thoughts about Hill’s spirited energy. ZZ Top has carried on in his absence, per Hill’s wishes, according to his bandmates. The ZZ Top lineup of Hill, guitarist/singer Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard ran 51 years uninterrupted. The counter reset last year when bassist and singer Dusty Hill died, ending a run in rock ‘n roll for which I find no precedent. Photo: Noah Riffe/Associated Pressīilly Gibbons uttered a phrase about ZZ Top many times over many years, adapting it every so often to acknowledge the passing of time: “Three guys, three chords, (some number) of years.” ZZ Top performs at the Pinewood Bowl, Sunday, Aug.

Any thoughts on whether importing a bunch of FLAC files into XLD and creating virtual disks would be advantageous? I've read something about using XLD to create virtual disks of albums, but I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I created them by dragging them from the Finder. I'm playing FLAC files in my playlists only. I have set all settings as suggested by Sonic: Cache=3GB, Disable All, Bypass Gain, Finder Off, Playlist (No iTunes), EQ Off. The progress bar for the track continues to move, but no audio is sent to my phones. But my 3.0.3 stops outputting sound after 30 minutes, or so. Maybe they’ll be uncovered in a future version.Īmarra makes music sound great. Set sQ to Rock, then grab the yellow control point and try setting your filter with that…See the difference? The current sQ version doesn’t expose all the controls that you have in Sonic EQ. A higher order filter would help to nail your gain versus frequency requirements. The gain at those two frequencies is less than 1 dB, which is negligible. What you really need is a 2nd or 3rd order paramet, since you’ll notice that the filter skirts (edges) don't extend far enough to hit your 1k and 5k targets. The white spline is the aggregate response of all four filters working together.īy grabbing the blue control point, centering it on around 3k, and pulling it down 3 dB, you’ll get the -3 at 3k response we talked about above. The presets have more exotic topologies but, if you set it to Flat and start messing with the four control points, you’ll quickly see what corresponds to what you’re hearing. It has a visual component and will give you a good feel for what a basic, 1st order paramet “looks” and sounds like. Since you must be in the latter camp, and you’re an Amarra user already, try this Head to and download the demo of sQ. Humm, tough one since apparently the EQ version your using doesn’t have a gain versus frequency graph associated with it…EQ is either set “by ear,” in which case you don’t really care what the values are, or because you have a problem you want to put a bandaid on. The look like a mesa in Utah, rather than an old hill that’s been rounded off by a glacier…Sorry for the geological simile! 1st order filters are rounded and sine–like, whereas 4th order filters have quite straight, vertical sides. Amarra Symphony as well as sQ have multi–order filter, so you can specify 1st through 4th order. 2nd order filters have 6 x 2 or 12 dB per octave slopes so, the filter’s gain “happens” over a much narrower range of frequencies from no gain change to full gain change. Another way of thinking about Order is to ask, “How quickly does the filter transition into and out of affecting the audio?” Most filters, unless specified, are “1st order.” That is, they transition at 6 dB per octave, which is quite a wide range of frequencies. That setting determines the slope of the filter’s “skirts,” or what happens at the two ends of its range. One other setting you may need, depending on which Amarra (or other equalizer) you have, is the Order. Then set your Gain to +3 dB and you’re done. then take that and add it to the lower frequency limit so 1000 + 2000 = 3000 Hz. The center is half that or 4000/2= 2000 Hz. To do that you need to find the range itself. What I would do is first find the "center" of your frequency range. And with all the wires and connectors and how the installer did things, it got confusing real fast. This probably seems like a very novice question, but I have struggled with this more this time than in the past as I have 10 fans in my correct system right now as I am running WCG and GPU grids more than I was before and I need to keep the PC cool. Note, I did find a site that sort of explains some of this, but I still kind of do not understand 100%. Anything I should know to avoid frying my MB or overdoing it? the differences between the Pins, PWM vs I forgot the other one, and the IDE voltage issues.Ģ. But that's another issue, so for now, the fan is working but the LEDs are not as I haven't plugged it in yet.Ĭan someone shed some light on two things.ġ. I have no idea why he had it in an Molex, as I read Molex seems to be less volts no? So maybe that is why the fan started dying? I am also looking for a ARGB extender, as the connection is at the front of the MB, and the connection to the new fan is way too short. So right now it is plugged into a Y MB slot, but only one fan on the Y, so I would guess I am safe to do this and not to over do it for voltage on the MB. I think the guy I asked to helped me yanked all that out and plugged it in to the AIO ports instead, he said it doesn't matter, same same. But it is not plugged into the same place as the installer had plugged it in. Note, I originally had a Cooler Master CPU dual fan heat sink, I pulled that out and put in a Noctura. So I ended up plugging this into an extra cable I saw laying around that connects to the CPU MB 4 pin connector. I can find a 3 pin I think, but not four. I cannot for the life of me find a 4 pin to IDE connector. So I bought a Sickleflow 120 ARGB fan that says it is a 12VDC 0.15A fan. He had connected to a row of 4 Molex connectors. And what I found was that this case fan was a DC12V 0.4A fan, but the connector was Molex, not 3 or 4 pin. Because of the above I just cut the wires and pulled everything through both directions. I just had to change out my rear exhaust fan as it was leaking oil and making noise. I had an installer do all the cabling and installation of components to my system, so the wiring is too tight and too organized to find where stuff leads. I am worried I am going to end up blowing my MB or causing other damage because I am not sure how or where to plug in the fans. Normally color is completely inconsequential to electrical performance, but in this specific case filtering away other colors actually helps eliminate series that are close but not quite what we need.I am incredibly confused about 3 pin vs 4 pin vs PWM vs whatever when it comes to power consumption of fans. This filter is what will get you closest to the style usually intended when one is search for ‘the Dupont connector’.įinally, just to drive it home, you can filter for color, as the black color is fairly universal to this style of connector. Next, select your fastening type - or rather, your lack of a fastening type.ĭupont connectors are most notable for their slim profile, which most achieve by not having any retention save friction. They do sometimes come in dual-row varieties, but those are a more complex search - for now we’re going to focus on the basic, single-row types common to hobby electronics. This gets you to the basic structure of a ‘Dupont’ connector. The easiest way to find the ballpark these devices reside in is in our Free Hanging, Panel Mount | Rectangular Connectors | Electronic Components Distributor DigiKey category, then apply the following filters: The style people commonly think of as ‘Dupont’ is a vairation of rectangular connector characterized by a very low vertical profile, black coloration, and a 2.54mm standard pitch. Much like the infamous case of “The Molex Connector”, there’s no specific industry term that calls out Dupont connectors and only Dupont connectors. Images of both the G1 and G7 standard projectiles can be found on the internet. However, the G1 standard is a poor representation of a modern low-drag projectile and in the 1940s the G7 standard came along, representing a modern, boat-tail US artillery shell. They carefully measured the drag of this projectile and also measured the TOF and retained velocity versus distance. The initial standard projectile, the G1 projectile, was of a German artillery projectile. This would allow reasonably accurate retained velocity and TOF calculations. It was an extremely tedious, expensive, and time-consuming effort to get the velocity and drag profile for just one projectile, let alone hundreds of different types.īut the ballisticians of this era figured out that by using a simple ratio, Ballistic Coefficient (BC), they could determine a reasonably good approximation of the drag of any projectile by comparing it to a standard projectile drag, as determined above. The velocity data would then be used to calculate the drag between each interval. The only way to define the drag on a projectile is to use the chronograph to measure the projectile’s retained velocity at various intervals down range. Imagine the challenges facing a ballistician back in the late 1800s: There are no computers, no radar and, at best, this person has access to a very crude chronograph. Today, the 6.5 Creedmoor is loaded by numerous ammo maker’s, including Winchester, Nosler, Hornady, and Federal. 260 Remington, a personal favorite, has struggled, though it gamely fights on. Even though this round has an amazing pedigree-designed in the late 1800s, it had a distinguished military career lasting decades, has an unimpeachable reputation on large game, and regularly won gold medals at the Olympics, thanks to its accuracy-it, too, suffered from the 6.5 curse and failed to reach the summit of the mountain. The 6.5×55 Swede, one of the most popular European cartridges for big game, migrated to North America in the late ’50s with the arrival of thousands of surplus Mausers. is a hot round with impressive ballistics, but it was overshadowed by the 7mm Rem. The 6.5 Remington Magnum never really got out of the starting gate, and the attempts to revive it were complete failures. This is a shame because some damn fine rounds have been crippled by this bias. 264-have never done well with American shooters. Lastly, it it has a bullet diameter of 6.5mm, and despite the widespread adulation of 6.5s beyond North America’s shores, these cartridges-whether called 6.5 or. Anyway, the metric designation was strike two. It’s the ballistic equivalent of the “Royale With Cheese” from Pulp Fiction. We only called it that because our European allies couldn’t figure out what a. But that Commie round is too crude to be considered part of the pantheon, and only hits the sales it does because of all the cheap military surplus SKS and AK rifles kicking around. The one other popular metric is the 7.62×39. Introduced back in 1962, it has been one of our top 10 hunting cartridges and top 10 centerfire cartridges for many years. It must be an unwritten rule that American shooters will tolerate one metric cartridge in the pantheon, and the 7mm Rem. Now, there’s one exception to this, and that’s the 7mm Rem. Hate to break it to you, but we tried the whole metric thing back when Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter were pulling on the oars, and it was as popular as fire ants in a tanning bed.
